He was sorry so many of the conspirators had been killed and tortured, now it was time for a little distancing from the old regime. Joaquin Balaguer knew he had only been a puppet president while Trujillo had been alive, but things were now different. They drew level, raking Trujillo's car with bullets. "There he is," cried Imbert, gunning the accelerator to the floor. How could they have let Trujillo live this long? How had they let themselves be bought by Trujillo while the rest of the country starved? "Are you sure he's coming this way?" asked Amadito, nervously. "I need to fuck a virgin."Īmadito, Imbert and Antonio de la Maza nursed their automatics. Then he noticed a dark stain spreading across his trousers. Yes, there was blood on his hands, but wasn't that the price of prosperity? And now the Americans and the Catholic Church were lining up against him. The moustache just so, and the eyes that had held a nation in thrall for more than 30 years. General Trujillo admired his reflection in the mirror.

My first experience with zombie media was likely Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Interesting answer – location does play a huge part doesn’t it? What was your first experience with zombie media? Was that experience what drew into writing the genre? (Note to self: start working on a day job bug-out plan). If the outbreak happened when I was at my day job, many miles from home, it’d take a miracle to survive. If the outbreak happened at a time I could get to one of my staging sites, then I think I’d stand a pretty good chance at riding out the zombie apocalypse (ZA) and fending off small hordes. Welcome Rachel! Let’s get into the question shall we? Tell us about your zombies? If the dead were to rise, do you think you’d stand a chance against them? For those of you unacquainted with Rachel, let’s take a moment to get to know her a little better… Today I have the pleasure of presenting an interview with Rachel Aukes, author of the Deadland Saga. She is not entirely likeable, but the reader roots for her in making the effort to take control of her life. Maureen is a caring person, and willing to put herself out to protect others. But she is fiercely independent and determined to find out what is going on around her. She has been in a mental institution recently, which leaves its stigma. I liked that progression in their behavior and characteristics. As the novel progresses, they become more human. The policemen start out seeming heavy-handed to the extreme, treating Maureen and her brother badly in interviews. There as so many things I liked about this book it is hard to cover them all. Nor is there the possibility for a truly happy ending. There is an optimistic resolution, but many of the characters in the book are not very pleasant people. The story deals with tough topics: incest, patient abuse, drugs, unemployment, dysfunctional families. Although she was planning on breaking up with her lover, she wants to know why he was killed. Some people might be intimidated by the police, but she questions their treatment of her and their methods, and she works at clearing her name. After her lover's dead body is discovered in her apartment, Maureen is one of two persons the police consider to be the most likely suspects. While I read this book in the winter, I can imagine reading it and contemplating life in a summer setting such as sitting atop a mountain peak with a backpacking partner or relaxing by river with a buddy or staring into a campfire with a good friend. This quick-to-read novel gives you a chance to philosophize about your life, the path not taken and the meaning of life. While the outcome is predictable, the forays into philosophy are relatable and offer good jumping off points whether to general philosophical ideas or to personal introspection. The dialogue flows naturally and the characters come to life. The Midnight Library was my introduction to Matt Haig and I thoroughly enjoy his writing. |
